Most people love monarch butterflies, but most do not realize that these lovely creatures absolutely REQUIRE MILKWEEDS, and ONLY MILKWEEDS, to feed their caterpillars. They CAN'T eat dandelions, or lettuce, or grass (or chocolate cake, ice cream cones, pickles, Swiss cheeses, salami, lollipops, cherry pie, sausage, cupcakes, or watermelon!). Although monarch butterflies are not an official "endangered species", their long term survival is in peril. We are a group of butterfly enthusiasts in Ann Arbor Michigan organizing to help spread the word about the the threats that face monarch migration and the importance of milkweed for the survival of monarch caterpillars. Our goal is to recruit new members committed to adding caterpillar saving milkweed patches to their gardens in and around Ann Arbor. We provide information about creating Monarch habitats certified by the Monarch Watch program at the University of Kansas, raising butterflies from eggs or caterpillars, and tagging butterflies to track their fall migration to Mexico. If you add a milkweed patch to your garden, we will add your profile and pictures of your garden to the website. July 2008 will be our first year in the Ann Arbor Jaycees Fourth of July parade. Check out our "News" section for more details. You can use the links at left to learn more about monarchs, the threats they face, and how you can help. Got Milkweed? If not, here is a good place to start!
